Artist of UNSEEN 2,0 - Atish Banerjee

UNSEEN 2.0 is an unconventional form of exhibition which is a digital art exhibition curated by Platform For Artists . This enables artists across the country to participate, showcase their work and connect with like minded people. The entire idea is to broaden the scope of exposure which the artists would probably not get at an offline event. We have sixty diverse artists from across the country who are a part of this one of it's kind art exhibition.

Here is a set of questions team Platform For Artists asked Atish about his everyday routine, his art interests and more.

Tell us about yourself.

I am a freelance commission artist, based in Mumbai. I have a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in applied arts and have done my post graduation from Mudra Institute, Ahmedabad. I am an advertising art director by profession, but painting has always been something close to my heart. For as long as I can remember, drawing portraits always fascinated me and it’s only recently that I took my serious hobby to a more professional level. I love traveling and collecting pictures, which I then translate into portraits.

What are your art interests?

I do a lot of commission art, customized portraits, made to order paintings etc. I primarily work in mixed medium, where I mix mediums like gouache, acrylic, watercolor, oil based and watercolor pencils. I also love working in dry pastels, pastel pencils, artist’s pencils, charcoal and graphite. I love to experiment with different surfaces and mediums. I love exploring the subject of portraiture but I have done some commission landscape paintings as well.

What are your views about the current scenario of art in our country?

Lots of talent, lots of potential, lots of variety! I am in awe of the absolutely amazing art and the abundance of artists in our country. I just want things to be a bit more streamlined and organized, so that good artists get the exposure they deserve and get recognized. It’s not practical for every artist to be represented by a gallery, but because of groups like ‘Platform for artists’ everyone gets a fair chance.

What are you working on currently?

I am doing a series of impressionistic landscape sketches in gouache called ‘Monsoon postcards’. These are different from what I usually do, as I also wanted to take a short break from portraiture. I am also working on a series called ‘Like the Masters’, where I try to emulate the work of the best portraiture artists. Also, I want to explore animal portraiture as a subject.

Where do you get your inspiration from?

Real people and their stories have always inspired me. The day-to-day things, the mundane, the overlooked, the neglected, the unglamorous, the ugly, the usual, the ordinary. This is where my inspiration lies.

Which kind of artists would you be interested to collaborate with?

Would love to collaborate with realists, who see things for their true nature. With portraiture artists who love to capture the endless expression of the human face. I would also love to collaborate with artists with different skill sets like photographers, so that I learn new things in the process.

What's the first thing you do when you wake up?

Be grateful followed by yoga.

Which is the most used app in your phone?

It’s a close tie between Instagram and WhatsApp

Which is the one song you can't get out of your head?

‘Are you sure’ by Willie Nelson.

You de-stress by?

Yoga, meditation, going for a walk or trek, playing with my dogs, gardening, cooking, de-cluttering, just being and of course painting.
