Here is a set of questions team Platform For Artists asked Raul Raj about his everyday routine, his art interests and more.
Tell us about yourself.
I ,Raul Raj Suresh Neelmage am pursuing masters of design in furniture design in CEPT university in Ahmedabad, India. I pursued my bachelors in architecture from Chennai. I have hands on experience on earth architecture. I spend time in Auroville and Himachal Pradesh building earth structures and gaining knowledge. I will practice earth architecture and my goal is to sustain through different traditional practices. I love making things, especially furniture and objects. I like to design with different scales of work and engage in making a change with design in this modern scenario. I believe in the process of making .
I have taken part in society interiors competition and charpoy furniture design competition in the serendipity art festival and won third place in India. My goal is to research and explore different material and technology along with traditional making methods with desired purpose and function through design.
What are your art interests?
My art interests include Industrial furniture design, abstract art and photography. I involve myself in making and designing objects. I design by exploring and testing and make prototypes. I am interested to experiment with industrial manufacturing and material technology. The exposure to tradition and craft of making gives me an opportunity to improve life through designing furniture and products in different scales.
I also express my thoughts through sketching and painting. I express through abstract art with a series of themes and the way to represent it. Exhibiting different techniques and developing my own style of work. I am interested to photograph night landscapes and structures.
What are your views about the current scenario of art in our country?
Art is growing in India in the current scenario with the help of social media platform , which reaches out to almost everyone. According to me, art keeps emerging during different times and situations. Since the evolution of technology, art and tradition has been misrepresented and portrayed, this is sometimes being looked down upon. Art is a tradition with a reason. It has a deeper sense of meaning and understanding of life and culture.
What are you working on currently?
I am currently involved in my master’s studio, where I am designing furniture and objects with prototyping and testing. I research and acquire skills necessary in my academic studio. I also spend time to develop my own products further efficiently in the market.
Where do you get your inspiration from?
I get inspired from the way objects are made and manufactured. The inspiration comes through different stages of design. One such inspiration is the material itself. The material is the start point of my design thinking and process and the right use of material wherever necessary and efficiently. The purpose and function of design inspires me to help making a better place to live.
Which kind of artists would you be interested to collaborate with?
I would like to collaborate with makers, manufacturers and traditional craftsmen.
What's the first thing you do when you wake up ?
I prepare myself by focusing on the list of things to do for the day and meditate.
Which is the most used app on your phone?
Which is the one song you can't get out of your head?
You de-stress by?
I de-stress by making objects and spending time in the workshop. I run a long way and spend time alone enjoying beautiful landscapes around.
