Artist of UNSEEN 2.0 - Dr. Vaidehi Datar | Watercolor/ mixed media artist

UNSEEN 2.0 is an unconventional form of exhibition which is a digital art exhibition curated by Platform For Artists . This enables artists across the country to participate, showcase their work and connect with like minded people. The entire idea is to broaden the scope of exposure which the artists would probably not get at an offline event. We have sixty diverse artists from across the country who are a part of this one of it's kind art exhibition.

Here is a set of questions team Platform For Artists asked Vaidehi about her everyday routine, her art interests and more.

Tell us about yourself.

Hi, I am Dr. Vaidehi Datar, a physical therapist by profession and an artist by passion. I have always been practicing art and painting but I seriously got into watercolor art as a way of combating homesickness, loneliness and depression when I was working and living in New York, U.S. almost 3 years ago.

What are your art interests?

I practice black pen/ ink work and gouache painting but I am mostly into watercolors. It’s a difficult medium to work with, but I like the challenge. The transparent, flowy nature of watercolors presents an array of possibilities to work with. I have painted flowers, leaves, wreaths, illustrations, realistic objects, bookmarks and old vintage windows and door series. Everytime I pick a brush, make a stroke, the negative, judging world around me slowly disappears and I feel peaceful and contented.

What are your views about the current scenario of art in our country?

If anyone wishes to get into the field of art this is the right time. The society is more open and admiring the different profession like art in comparison to the mundane fields like doctors, and engineers. Art community is developing and various platforms are striving hard to provide a stage for amateur and professional artists. Having said that, I think people still think twice before spending on art and I think that needs to change. What we need to encourage the society is identifying good art, and developing a liking for the same.

What are you working on currently?

Currently I am working on a ‘doors from everywhere’ series. It started as a casual practice art on a relaxed Sunday and made its way into a commissioned series. I am 5 doors down and am working on few more.

Where do you get your inspiration from?

Inspiration can strike at the most boring, everyday places. I did a series of fruit illustrations recently, and I believe the very view that inspired me into creating the series was a fruit hawker selling heaps of plums at our nearby farmer’s market! I think if you look at the world with a creative eye, anything and everything can inspire you.

Which kind of artists would you be interested to collaborate with?

I haven’t gotten a chance to collaborate with artists yet. But if I could pick, I would want to work with fabric/ cloth makers. I have lot of design ideas I think would look really good on scarfs, casual wear summer dresses and such. I am looking into such collabs actually.

What's the first thing you do when you wake up ?

Okay so, since art is still a part time job for me, I get up early by 5 and get some art done before heading to the hospital I work at. Initially it was a way for me to maintain sanity during the day, now it’s become a habit I live by. I might not create anything great and moving, but I definitely paint something. If for some reason I don’t paint that day, I feel unproductive! Blame my OCD!

Which is the most used app in your phone?

Oh it has to be Instagram. I am mad about the Insta stories and I love to get really creative with them in forms of filters, doodles, scribbles, etc. I think I have to owe it to Instagram to make me love art again because it has such an encouraging community always ready to inspire! Followed by Instagram, I think my second favorite app is Unfold for the amazing aesthetic appeal it provides.

Which is the one song you can't get out of your head?

Oh its so hard to name one. I am a big music buff and I listen to varied songs in all possible languages! I sing to my hearts content to ‘the bohemian rhapsody’ (one has to sing it out to love it), I sing and cry every time ‘ lukka chuppi’ plays, and I dance it out with Beyoncé songs. But If I had to say one song, it’ll undoubtedly be ‘fix you’ by Coldplay. That song is closest to my heart and my anchor out of mundane life. I was fortunate to attend the Coldplay concert in NY and it was once in a lifetime experience :)

You de-stress by?

I love driving alone, with good, beautiful songs blasting on the speakers, and singing along on top of my lungs! Friends and rains can be a beautiful addition to the above mix!
